Europa Nostra Award
After 1945 Herbst residence hosted various functions; it was a training centre for social welfare workers, a daily care centre for mentally ill, a Department of Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Volunteer Reserve Militia, a disabled cooperative, and also the workshops of Monument Preservation Studios.
In 1976 the residence was taken over by the Muzeum Sztuki. At that time all the buildings badly needed major repair works as years of improper use devastated and even destroyed some buildings (winter garden with a connecting passage).
Works conducted in Herbst Palace and the idea of using it for exhibitions were highly appreciated by the International Federation of Associations for the Preservation of European Cultural and National Heritage, which in 1990 honoured the Palace with the first in Poland medal EUROPA NOSTRA.
