A symbol of status, investment, passion or addiction – what is his/her collection to the collector? According to Walter Benjamin collecting is a specific experience: utopian, sentimental and very intimate. Can thus a collector be a romantic hero?
Not-Old Art is a selection of various essays about collections, their owners and role in the society. We can find here the story explaining how the collection of the Krakow family of Bartoszewicz reached Łódź and we will reflect upon the passion for collecting among the Łódź burgoise: was art the key to “quick nobilitation” or was it motivated by more intriguing reasons? The publication analyses the transformation of private collections into national heritage. Finally, there are texts reporting complex history of paintings from the Łódź collection in the Herbst Palace Museum.
